After nothing biting at Bear Lake I took my 2yr old son on a drive to Horseshoe just to see what we could get into up there. The spot I saw most people fishing from shore from was too steep to climb down to with my son (northwest corner of the lake) so instead we went to the boat launch. There was a few people there wading around swimming but not making very much noise at all. We didn't get a bite until I reeled in and saw a bunch of bluegill charging for it from a small patch of weeds on the south end of the launch near the property boundary. So instead of targeting trout, I turned to targeting those bluegill since I knew they would greedily gobble up anything I tossed out there. Without any weight I would toss the worm out about 10 feet and let my son reel it back in. It wasn't long before he had a bluegill ranging anywhere from 2" to 8" on the line. He enjoyed being able to scoop them up in his net and then I would turn them loose. We had more fun here than any time we had gone to Bear Lake. Although the big downfall of fishing from the launch is that people come to swim there too. There was a larger family that came with about 4 very noisy kids. Combining that to the quick pitter patter of rain I decided it was time to head home and get some lunch. Even with the swimmers I think we will head here first from now on...the bluegill don't mind people swimming nearby, no matter how much noise they make. I just wish I knew someone who owned shoreline on this lake. Thursday I plan on bringing the rowboat and hitting some more remote locations with the flyrod.
