Muskie Guy finally convinced me to hit the water with him and get a taste of the muskie fishing experience. I agreed to go, telling him that I would target the bass while he threw brick-sized lures into the lake for his beloved muskies.
We hit the water around 5:45am just as daylight was creeping in. The weather started out with full low cloud cover as the latest storm front rolled in. Due to the foul weather, we had the lake mostly to ourselves, which is very rare for this lake any time of the year.
We started out near the public boat launch and worked our way around the coves and drop-offs heading Southeast along the lake. There was little action for the first hour except for a couple perch, a bluegill or two, and a nice 2 pound largemouth that attacked Muskie Guy's charlie.
Just as Muskie Guy was suggesting I add a steel leader to my 8lb test line, and I was replying that I wasn't going to catch any dang muskie, WHAM! ten feet from the boat, out of the depths, I was hit by a 30 inch muskie! Just as we landed it to the boat it bit through my line. This convinced me to add the steel leader to my little Mepps Black Fury. Five casts later, WHAM again, this time a 40 incher hit my little spinner and light tackle. This fish weighed at least 18 pounds. I loosened the drag and it headed for deeper water, thought was off and then headed the opposite direction towards the cover of a dock. I had him nearly to the boat when he spit out my lure while doing a tail dance three feet above the surface. Muskie Guy, desperately not wanting to be skunked, then landed a 20 incher hiding in the weeds about 5 minutes later.
We continued to work our way south until we realized that we were nearly soaked to the skin and cold from the rain, which was by then falling steadily. We decided to call it a day and head for shore.
Thanks Muskie Guy for giving me "the fever". I have now added muskie fishing to the top of my list of fish to go after. Looks like I will have to try to get both of us raises at work so we can afford the extra gear for this ultimate predator of the fresh water depths.
Looks like we will do a few more "practice runs" at Silver before we conquer the fat tigers of Curlew. Who knows, then we just might head West and show the guys who fish Merwin how to catch 'em with teeny-tiny bass tackle!

what's up with that musky? his head looks a bit funny...did you guys prop him and cut off his upper jaw or what? good job though, i never heard of so many muskies in such little time! i think you should head down to Mayfield and show those guys whats up!! i'll see you there!

You eastsiders gonna take some time off and come on over and show off your "style".

Holy mackerel, look at all these comments! We were fishing in depths from 0 (shoreline) to about 30 feet. The snub-nosed muskie (muskieguy says it is probably a Leech Lake strain) hit in about 20 feet of water. The monster that we didn't get a picture of was about 25 feet down. The little toothy beast that muskieguy caught was hanging in the weeds in about 2 feet of water.
We would love to hit the West side with you guys, but muskieguy and myself work at the same place and well, they just wouldn't be able to function without us right now! Maybe by next year's tournament we will be able to get over there.
Muskieguy fished the same spot last Monday and caught that bulldog-faced muskie again. I can't wait to see what he looks like in a couple years, so please, no muskie thumpin'!
