Took my boys out this evening hoping to find a muskie or two for them. We grabbed a boat from the tweaky guy at Rubies and headed out a rowin' like mad. My oldest boy caught several largemouths while using a perch shad rap. We were in about 6 feet of water out in from of Rubies. Then my youngest boy had a muskie hit his bluegill shad rap while we were farther East, but still working along the N. shore. He lost it after a brief fight because he's just a pup and can't quite set them hooks yet. He loved it though and was chattering on about all the way home. We moved out along the bar that runs south from the shore and I managed to pull in a little muskie. He was a little fella, just barely snoot hooked, I managed a quick pic and let him shake off while the boys watched. He hit a firetiger kickin' minnow.
We meandered around the area for a while and talked with some folks looking to catch trout. I told them the best times for trout were an hour before and after sun-up and sun-down. Those trout are boiling all over the place where there is water deeper that 20 feet. A wedding ring with a worm trolled behind you nice and slow always worked for me when I wanted to catch a big brown. Small rapala's in rainbow also worked good, the browns love to eat rainbows.
After some more rowing we wound up down by the launch and I hooked another muskie on the kickin' minnow. This one was really shallow, only in a foot or two of water hiding in the weeds. I let my little guy reel him in and he did a good job. I grabbed a head shot of this one, a bit over 30", and released it. The sun was setting so we called it a day and rowed back.
This time of year the larger muskies in silver are in the deeper water adjacent to their summer time homes. If you fish in the weeds look for green, healthy weed patches. They are still producing oxygen and attracting snacks for the larger predators and will continue to hold fish as long as they are green. Most of my time is spent on the deep weed edges and on weed points that drop into deep water. Rocky area's are still holding fish, and the two prominent ones in the lake will have active fish on there deep water sides most of the time.
Please release 'em to fight another day.
