For positive species identification please see WDFW.WA.GOV/outreach/fishing/t&sid.pdf Published June 1995. General rule, 12 or fewer rays on the anal fin is a trout. or char or Atlantic Salmon. 13 or more is a Pacific salmon. King (15-19). Silver however is 12-17, as noted in silver picture #1. The regs only note that an Atlantic salmon is 8-12 (as is a steelhead/rainbow). Somewhere in my 72 of fishing experience I was taught the anal fin id was the surefire way.
The regs should include this info, preferably with the salmon and trout in color on the same page for easier comparison. I doubt, though, that the game warden on Lk Wa is compassionate enough to accept the incomplete fishing regs as an excuse. But it can be confusing as we saw earlier.
