My buddy and I went out to Samish this afternoon in search of some trout. This was our first time on the lake so we weren't very familiar with it. We stated on the north end north of the bridge and trolled between 110 and 50 feet with big jon size 0 divers at appx 30 ft. We started out trolling needlefish and had one taker but it didn't hook up. After quite a while and no more take downs we switched over to dodgers and wdding-ring combos. Went south under the bridge and started tolling in 30 ft of water, my buddy hooked a really healthy rainbow just south of the bridge which we kept for dinner, it came in at 1lb 12oz on the scale, not too shabby. Trolled around some more with no more action and decided to call it a day. On the way in we saw a bunch of really huge largemouths holding tight to the bridge pilings, I flipped a few lures there way but had no takers whatsoever they were holding tight to cover and not at all interested in hitting a passing lure, not even a live nightcrawler; go figure. Surface temperature was 47* and we had the lake to ourselves save 1 other boat trolling as well. Marked a lot on the finder over deep water (120~) at about 60-80 feet, I will be back to try w/ my downriggers next week early in the week I think.
Overall a very nice day out, we will be back soon. I can't wait for the kokanee to start showing! (2 more months or so)
Matt
