The Wife and I finally made our first trip to Lake Tapps. I, myself, had fished it with Bill G. one time last year. The wife and I were primarily targeting smallmouth bass and this was our first time on the water this year. We hit the water about 10:30 A.M. and fished until 3:30 P.M. The water was great and there was a light breeze most of the day. We started out by fishing the area north of Inlet Island but did not have any action there so we moved to an area to the southeast of Snag Island. I'm not real familiar with the lake, so forgive me if my directions seem a little off. For those of you that fish the lake more often, we went under the bridge by the birthing center and held the east shore, back into a snag and stump filled bay at the end. We fished primarily in about 4-5 feet of water or less. I threw a few cranks in areas that looked like they might hold a musky or two, but I did not catch any. I did eventually battle it out with a 38" tiger that couldn't resist my 5" Senko. Not huge, but on a 6'6" Loomis Bass rod and 6 lb. test mono, it was fun just the same. I released him successfully and for about 30 minutes, continued to fish cranks in the same area (with my bigger rod) to see if I could get another, but to no avail. I did, however, see one dash out from under the boat. We spent the rest of the afternoon fishing for smallmouth and caught 6 total. I was fishing with a wacky rigged, 5" Senko, cinnamon and Black. I caught a 2 pounder, a 2-1/2 pounder and one that tipped the scales at just over 4 pounds. My wife, fishing with a Texas rigged 4" grub, cinnamon and black, caught two, 2 pounders and one, 2-1/2 pounder. We caught fish, We had fun and We got to spend some quality time on a beautiful lake......Life is Good!
