It appears that my earlier report on Stan Coffin, died out there in cyberspace, so I'll recap. Last Friday I decided to try out Stan Coffin lake. Last fall I picked up a small (12') '73 Starcraft as a project and so I could fish smaller lakes that will not accommodate my Lund. I was raised up on farm pond fishing and still find a lot of satisfaction catching various spinyrays that thrive in such environments.
On my first outing I caught several LMB in the 4 -5 lb range all in fairly shallow water. I vowed to return.
This morning 04/20
Ignoring the gathering black rain clouds I headed out this morning. I live about 40 minutes away so the drive isn't a costly gamble.
I returned to the old area of success but could only manage one smallish bass. the wind was pretty bad so boat control was a challenge. Finally the winds calmed some but the clouds began to gather. I started to fish an area along the north side of the lake. and was quickly rewarded with several 14 - 16 inch bass, then a 18" bruiser. I was using a watermelon 4" worm fished in a finesse rig , very slowly. depth, about 6 - 10 feet deep.
Once again the winds hit. The surface water temp was about 59.9 degrees. All this promising activity has got me dreaming of of warmer evenings and the possibility of some great top water action.
So; for all you fishers out there with smaller craft, lakes like Stan Coffin are jewels. Today I had the whole lake to myself. as I left I noted that Burke and Quincy had quite a few campers and fishers. Evergreen had but one bass boat on it.
There is one important note: Stan Coffin is CATCH AND RELEASE, for BASS.
good luck and keep the dry side up.
