Another great day at Heart Lake.
My brother in law called me up late last night informing me he already had a sitter for his kid, and we'd be leaving *early* in the morning. Well, he showed up at 7:00am and we were on our way....poles in the water by 8:00am. By no means a true *early* start, but this was the first time either of us have fished Heart Lake before 11:00am.
It was a FOGGY morning on the lake and the surface was smooth as glass.
By 10:00 the fog was breaking up and the wind started working up....once the surface turned choppy, and the sun got strong the fish really slowed down.
Like last time, we used Power Bait.
My brother in law started using red with no hits...after my second fish on chartreuse w/ an offbrand "rainbow colored" mix he switched to a green power bait with glitter. He had his first fish within 30 seconds of being in the water.
We ended up bringing in a 2 planters and 3 hold-overs over a 1.5 hour period...I also caught my largest rainbow ever from heart lake, 16.5"...not sure about weight, but it was easily 2x larger than the typical Rainbows we pull from here--very deep body. He put up one heck of a fight, and made a LONG run when he got close enough to the shore to spot us. Good times with a medium/light-action rod!
We also managed to successfully complete our first double of the season--each pulling in and landing a Rainbow at the same time.
We watched a handful of boats trolling the lake as well as some fly-fishers but saw only one fish boated. Not sure what most were using, but one mentioned using a wedding ring and a piece of worm.
We did witness a few other's landing fish from the shore--fellow powerbait users. I'm not sure if we found the "honey hole" of the lake or what, but we seem to be pulling out good numbers of fish every visit.
Since we can legally use 3 hooks on a line, I rigged up a 36" leader with two #10 hooks this morning trying to "double my chances." The first at 22" the second at the end. I pulled three fish on this setup...the first two (a stocker and a hold-over) gulped up both hooks, while a third only snagged the lower hook.
Cast 'em out as FAR as you possibly can...we've been using 3/4-1oz. of weight to get maximum distance.
