Launched the dinghy around 7 am and fished until 11:00. I could see trout hitting topwater, so I threw on a homemade wedding ring and did a little trolling just to warm up. After catching & releasing 4 dink trout in the first 30 minutes, I decided to focus on largemouth bass exclusively. Lake Cassidy lived up to its reputation as a tough place to catch bass -- but they are definitely in there. The dark water requires that you pretty much hit them in the face with a lure, so the key is combing the water with lots of casts. I had a bass on for a few seconds before he spat out my lizard. The way it was tugging makes me think it was a decent fish. Very solid. Unfortunately that was the only bass bite I had all day! Grr... I was fishing a 5" lizard rigged weedless and weightless (watermelon & black flake). Mr. Bass was hanging out in a pocket of brush in the middle of some little pads and he grabbed the lizard immediately when it hit the water.
I gave up on other baits because they kept getting hung in brush -- even some "weedless" rigs like shakeyhead jigs. Not sure what they were getting hung up in, but it was strong enough to break 8lb mono without moving at all.
The fishfinder didn't mark many fish today -- probably because they were in skinny water along the shoreline. I watched a guy catch several dink crappie while his boat was anchored in front of "the big stump". Not my cup of tea, but he was having fun and that's all that matters. I'll mark it on a HotSpot map for folks who like to catch small crappie.
