Next time try a quill or torpedo shaped bobber, like those made by Thill. They slip under the water easier so the fish reject the bait less. You can also find them pre-weighted to help with casting distance, but you just want the "body" of the float to rest just above the water, with the quill or flag end resting high.

My wife an I fish up there quite a bit in fact. We limit out nearly every time.
The last couple of weekends we have noticed the "veteran's" that you speak of. We have learned that they are normally the smaller ones.
Here's a tip: we use the following - 1/4 oz slip egg style weight w/ 24" - 30" leader line to the smaller gold hook loaded with Orange Power Bait & white marshmallow beneath. (load the marshmllow first - then the power bait on the hook).
My wife - last trip out - got tired of "feeding" the veteran's - she switched out to a small GOLD TREBLE hook - using only Orange Power Bait. She did well at nailing the veteran's - and yes - most of them smaller than what we usually catch.
