Arrived at Tanwax around 0530 am. Didn't get a water temperature reading as I forgot to bring my thermometer. I would guess the water was right around 60F at the top foot or so.
Water was fairly calm, a bit of chop from a steady 5-10 mph breeze from the west/southwest. Didn't have much luck from around 0600 am to about 0930. Floated to the floating dock at the east end, anchored and talked to a friend while indicator fishing chironomids. Started off at a two foot depth and made adjustments from there. Ended up at about eight feet of tippet below the indicator. Had a couple hits, but no hook ups. By then the boats were out, bombing up and down the lake and the bite died off.
Decided to tie on a reddish-brown woolly bugger and troll the lake. I trolled down the middle, the sides, in and around the docks. Tried a sinking tip line fairly slowly, but had nothing interested. Changed to a full floating line to keep the fly up, sped up the trolling speed and started getting fish consistently. For the two guys in the rental boat who talked about how I was trolling too fast...I hooked seventeen rainbows, netted fourteen, and lost three as they spit the hook at the boat. I also noticed when you turned in your boat to Rainbow Resort....your stringer was empty, sorry to see that.
Today was a good day!
