I arrived at the launch and was on the water before the sun hit the lake 5:45 AM. I started out with my favorite, F-7 Perch Scale Flatfish, about 2 feet behind a Giant Cowbell. I was running Cajun Red monofilament with a ½ ounce lead weight about 70 feet behind the boat. The water temp was probably in the upper 60’s at the surface and there wasn’t even a hint of a breeze. The water was like a mirror. Just the way I like it. I fished that way for about 45 minutes without so much as a single hit. So I looked in my tackle box trying to find something the fish most likely hadn’t seen in a long time. I chose a fluorescent pink Rooster Tail and right away I started getting some hits. I was directly across from the launch at the small rock bluff below the buzzard trees when I hooked and landed a nice 12” Cutthroat. I continued south toward the weed island and just before I got there I hooked and landed a 10” Rainbow. Then I was heading for Tree 11. That’s where most everyone still fishes but there wasn’t anyone there. So I trolled through the area and hooked and landed a nice 12” Rainbow right at the tree. Then the wind came up and I decided it was prudent not to force the issue against whitecaps with a 12’ jonboat, and I left the water with 3 fish. I probably had about 6-8 strikes in less than 3 hours. It’s going to be fried trout, hash browns and corn on the cob for dinner tonight. I was driving away at 8:45. It was a very pleasant 3 hours.

We had potato salad instead of hash browns. It was awesome. That was the first taste of trout this season.

I usually fish Badger, right next door to Williams, and have great luck with bows and cutts but have always thought I should try Williams. Thanks for a great report with some good detail.

I thought you were primarily a flyfisherman? Fall off the wagon like I did several years ago? Just kiddin'!

When I go fly fishing, it's primarily in catch and release areas. This time I wanted something to eat. I'd fish Liberty Lake more, but I don't much like the public access and there are way too many water skiers. They have a right to the water just like anyone else, so I opt for calmer waters.

I hear ya. I live maybe a mile from the LL launch and never go. Between the foul-mouths hanging out right at the launch, the crazy launch itself, and the crowds, I don't usually go there either. Too bad too, it's having a great year. I can't recommend Badger enough, for some nice rainbows and even nicer cutthroats. PM me for info on where we always have good luck.

Hope to finally meet you on on the water one of these days!
