My grandparents live at Diamond Lake at the northshore bay, so I've been fishing there all my life and know the lake very well. Many years ago Cutthroat were the fish Diamond was known for, but after a falling out with the people who stocked diamond with the Cutthroat slowly they all disappeared. Now a new trout has appeared and has done better in this lake than I think anyone could've ever imagined... German Brown! Only introduced a few years ago these fish have amazing color, are very plentiful, and have GROWN!
I went fishing with my dad in the morning after a miserable trip the night before (my dad caught a rainbow and a catfish, I caught nothing). My dad really wanted me to catch something so after he caught 2 small germans early he offered to switch me poles, but I was stubborn and refused. Finally I caught my first fish about a 10 in german brown but hardly anything to get too excited about. As it got later in the day I decided to switch to a rapala lure, even though my dad did not want me to in fear of tangling our lines. After a few hit and misses I thought about switching the treble hooks but didn't have any the right size so I put my lure back out there... WAM I got a big fish on, but than I wasn't sure I still had but continued reeling in. I felt tugging but also the line went limp a few times, probably from the boat being in neutral, right when I got to about a color left the fish gave me everything it had and even pulled out a little line. As I got to the leader both myself and my dad expected to see a large rainbow trout... Then we saw this yellow and brown fish with a salmon like head slowly come out of the depths. My dad miss-net it and it jumped, my heart sank, but we got on the second try. 21inches 4 pounds, by far the largest trout I ever caught out of this lake (I have caught a couple of 5 pound largemouth but that is another story) After taking pics I cleaned the fish and put it in the freezer, should make a good meal.
