Western Bass Club Team Tournament
We arrived at the Silver lake launch a little after 6:30am. It was dark and the temperatures were still dropping. The lot was filled with shiny glitter filled bass boats and then several pickup trucks with camouflage jon boats in the back started arriving. Someone mentioned that they thought it might be opening day of duck season. While everyone was launching the sky just started to get light enough to see the difference between the trees and sky and you could see the frost... we started hearing shots from every direction.
The cold morning and frost made for slippery decks, icy docks, and frozen rod guides. The team limit was 6 Bass no minimum size. We fished for several hours without even a nibble. We tried the weeds, stumps, and pads... nothing. We started fishing some docks and got a few nibblers, but nothing solid. Then we ran into another team, they had caught 6 and culled 1. They reminded us that with the cold weather don't forget to downsize. So we did... big time. I went to 3" weightless senkos and I think 2000Subaru was throwing 5" senkos. The very next dock I caught 3 little largies in about 5 casts. They were hunkered deep under the docks and it took some serious skipping to get back to them. 2000Subaru then switched to 3" senkos and we had 6 fish from that one dock in less than 45 minutes. Then the big one hit. I heard some commotion and looked up, 2000Subaru was playing this fish that fought like a wet bath towel. I got the net ready and we landed what would be the big fish for day one - a cold 3.58 pound largemouth. After that we hit a few more docks and caught another 12 or so fish culling out the smaller ones as we went along.
At the day one weigh in we had six fish weighing 8.34 lbs, which was good for second place. 2000Subaru also had the day one big fish. We did not fish on day two and we still took 6th place overall out of 12 teams. Not bad for a first tournament. I wish we could have fished the second day.
