To concur with Anglinarcher's report today, we were one of the last boats on the water. Headed out around 11:00A to a building southwest wind. Casting proved relatively ineffective where it once was proven. Did see some follows, one fish was so determined after slashing a bait that was pulled from the water, slashing again at the bait while held two feet above the water, and hooked once the bait was returned to the water. That was fun.

As casting was not proving to be the fish catching magic that it was hoped to be, we moved to trolling north along the last third of the lake towards the creek. Remember that Southwest wind. By the time we reached the inlet stream at about 3:00P, the front wall had arrived and was pushing rollers to 3 feet with heavy whitecaps. My 18 foot bass boat was about too get very wet, I envy the guys with windshields and curtains this time of year.

That was it, we were stormed out, running the length of the lake in 3'+ rollers at 1/2 throttle to keep the nose up. The waves coming around the kink at midlake were the biggest I've ever seen at Rock, although if anyone was brave (foolish) enough to be there on Sunday I'm sure they saw bigger.

Hi Hawk. I talked to several other boats as I was leaving, and nothing seemed to work well. A friend and his wife in a much bigger boat then mine were blown off, and their trolling proved totally useless. You have got to love the waves that form at the dog leg don't you. Last year I got caught in a blow when I was all the way to the other side, and I had to push through that area. If I did not have a self bailing bilge pump, windshield (kept the water out of the face, but not off the body), and had not brought my rain gear, I would have been another body count on that lake. And with all of my warnings, I saw a guy out there with a 12' boat, and three people, and another boat that looked much smaller, with a single guy. At least the single guy stayed pretty close to the launch. I think that the 12' with the three must have heard me tell my friend that they sure had better have their Life Insurance paid up, because just before the wind kicked up a couple more notches, they got off.

Bazzdude, this is not a typical LMB lake, and yet it has some great LMB. If you have ever fished a canyon bass lake, like Utah/Arizona's Lake Powell, or Colorado's Pueblo, then you may already have the skills. If you are more of a traditional bass fishermen, then it will be a challenge. Do some research on canyon bass fishing, remember that the primary forage for the big bass is trout, and Cray fish, and you will do OK. Just don't expect to start catching big bass right away. Personally, as good as it is, I loose too much tackle fishing it correctly, so I go elsewhere most of the time.

Oic, drop shoting, pig n jig etc.. on the bottom always looses a lot. Top water and sinkos are not the way to go huh> There is lots of shore cover for them though. Expecially in some of the arms.

Hey guys. While I will not say that Rock is the best bet for bass in the area, it can be a very good one at the right times. Your biggest issue with the bass is finding the fish (big surprise). A little later in the spring - early summer, the inlet creek will change from trout fishing to some fine bass fishing on top water and spinner bait presentations. If you look back a couple of years in the Rock reports you'll find one from me that supports that claim.

Like Archer says, fishing jigs and drop shot is a road to financial and mental ruin at this lake. Thankfully, the clear water supports some remarkable top water fishing in early summer. Dead sticking floating baits (big one's) will call up fish from surprisingly deep water, including the browns -- they really smack em! Try this technique along the willow bank flats that are just north of the landowners beach area about halfway up the lake on the east side. That flat is huge, you can work the top well out from the bank.

I'd keep fishing the bass at this lake more often but it gets difficult for me to get my boat in (AND OUT) of the water later in the summer when the water drops. Check out Downs and Lake Spokane (Long Lake) for some other good options. Good Luck.

Archer, yeah our prevailing winds just so happen to perfectly line up with the south end of the lake, and to make things worse you've got to stay in the middle of that section to avoid the lakes namesake! No shelter along the banks, just grin and bear it!
