Finally got the kids out this afternoon, started fishing at the dock at about 2:30PM. There were about 3 other rods out when we arrived, and no fish. Two were using worms, the other was tossing a rooster tail.

We were fishing 3 rods, trying all colors of powerbait off the bottom. I also tried powerbait up higher off a slip-bobber, and a couple of GULP grubs.

By 4:00PM there were 10-12 rods at the dock/ramp and still not a single fish caught. Several boats were going in and out. One fly fisherman in a pontoon hooked up just outside the boat ramp, but that was it.

The kids and I decided to call it a day at 4:15PM. Right as we were packing up our gear, one guy throws a rooster tail right off the edge of the boat ramp (his first cast) and brings up a nice brown trout. By now there's probably 16 rods out as others have showed up and several are now crowding the ramp.

It was a GORGEOUS afternoon though, and we did have fun.

Fishing at the public fishing spot is tough at Liberty. I suspect that if you took off walking straight out, you would get to your maximum casting length and still not be over your head. This means that the fish are not going to be bunched up there all of the time. Try fishing as early in the day as the law allows, or as late in the evening as the law allows. Other good options are when the sun is blocked by the clouds, and better yet, you have some rain. In short, as far as I am concerned, fishing at the public fishing spot is tough on kids.
