The shore near the launches is flat out about 30' of so, then it drops almost straight down to about 25'. That means you will loose a lot of tackle fishing on the bottom. As the water clears, there are some good days from shore, but as you suggested, most of the time, boats rule on Rock. To improve you shore chances, try to rig with a slip float. Set the stop so the line will hold just above the bottom, and have a float large enough, with a rod long enough, to cast it well past the drop. Let the bait drift with the outlet current. When you get a take, do not strike, but real quickly until you feel weight, then set the hook. This will give you some chance of catching fish at Rock from the public access, but it takes some practice and trial and error to get the technique figured out.

4/1/2009 10:23:00 AMI fished Rock twice last spring from shore and did well with browns and bows to 20 inches. I do have a boat but I have heard stories of huge rocks hidden inches from the surface taking out outdrives. I love my boat and dont want to hurt her. Do you have any advice about boating Rock. I saw plenty of boats on the water so it must be safe...I guess one needs to know what areas to stay away from?

4/1/2009 11:04:00 PMScottpratt, I took Aaron on Rock Lake last Saturday and shows him every rock that I knew of . I can't/won't promise I know of all of them, but I have fished every inch of shore on that lake in the last 10 years. Aaron will be updating the HD maps for Rock sometime this month, and then premium members will have the hazards marked.
