We had a great morning fishing Lake McMurray. We left the WSFG boat ramp heading northwest and cast out the first rod. While getting ready to cast rod # 2, # 1 goes off. I hand the rod off the youngest member of the crew and shortly there after we have a fat 13” rainbow alongside…and another fish on! This pattern repeated itself many times over. An hour later we had our 20 fish onboard and were taking a scenic tour of the lake while heading back to the launch.

We were fishing very small Dick Night and other similar trout spoons. The fish preferred white with a pink head or a hammered brass finish, fished on the surface. We flat lined the spoons with no weight and trolled them approximately 60’ behind the boat. Our trolling speed was .4 to .8 miles per hour and the water temperature varied between 53 and 54 degrees. Our final count was 20 fish to 13”, limits for the four of us. An observation: While waiting for the gang to arrive I had the opportunity to see a number of fish that were caught by other fisherman leaving the lake for the day. Many of the early fish caught were 8-12”. I have some ideas why ours were larger but who really knows. I wonder if the larger fish went on the bite a little later in the morning as the water surface temperature warmed a bit. It may also be that we fished very small spoons very slowly. Wait…maybe we’re just lucky.

We also fished very slow and very small Dick Knights with green tips. We didn't get to the lake until about noon. Our limit went to about sixteen inches. Lots of fun.
