Not bad on Goodwin tonight. Got off work early, and decided to check the smallie action. I started with my crankbaits, and switched to jigs and grubs, nothing. I then got up on the flats I was fishing and casted a drop shot into the wind out into deeper water (from 6' casting to 15'). I caught the first one on a white fluke on the drop shot dragging it up towards shallower water, it went 5.1lbs. I continued for a bit but decided to get out of the wind. I headed across the lake in the direction of the wind and got into some slack water. I started throwing a jerkbait in chrome and black and caught the 4 pounder under a dock. As I was cruising along I noticed a spawning bed...a quick look, and there was definately a smallie on it.....four casts later and I hit another four pounder on a jig. Now, there were beds and fish on them and the water temp was 59 degrees, but I feel guilty catching spawning bass because it's so dang easy!! I caught a couple more but didn't photo them because I wanted to get them back in the water asap, and that was enough for me!
I switched over and started looking for largemouth, when the skies opened up and the rain and hail started! A quick run to the launch and I was homebound....mainly because I didn't bring a coat and my raingear was at the house!
I am not going into detail on my bed fishing technique because I have seen too many bass harvested from beds....catch them fair and square to eat and I could care less, but yank one off a bed and throw it in a cooler and I think that's doing a diservice to the fishery, and I for one refuse to contribute to the act...
All in all it was a good evening, although I am still looking for my first largemouth from Goodwin this year.....
