I know you've been told this before, but the rules state that when fishing with bait or scent, all fish, kept OR released, count against your limit. If you continue to post reports like this we will remove them and ban your account.

5/9/2009 3:09:00 PMIt would be nice if someone caught a small lip hooked fish on bait (rare) that we could let that fish go and not count it towards our limit. The reason that this rule became neccessary is because people would go and catch 18 (or even more in one of your previous reports) fish on bait and let them go. This causes a bunch of dead fish in the lake. Some people cannot police themselves and don't know right from wrong so the WDFW has to make rules that effect everyone else.

5/10/2009 9:26:00 PMCatching fish in the lip on bait is not rare, at least not for me. And the rules state That on bait" Game Fish may be caught and released until the the daily limit is retained.. Retained being the key word here..
Retained is -
1. to keep possession of.
2. to continue to use, practice, etc.: to retain an old custom.
3. to continue to hold or have: to retain a prisoner in custody; a cloth that retains its color.
4. to keep in mind; remember.
5. to hold in place or position.
6. to engage, esp. by payment of a preliminary fee: to retain a lawyer.
So the way I see it is as long as your not hooking them in the Gills, eyes and tongue and they did not swallow it you can keep fishing until you keep five...
The rules do not say all fish caught with bait must count towards your limit...
I promise you all the fish except one were released unharmed..We were there for four hours and all fish swam away with fury....except the one on the stringer...

5/11/2009 1:23:00 PMCheck to make sure you have an up to date regs my page 5 is the boaters card advertisement.. Then if you do have a current one then turn to page thirty and read the bait rules section....Its not an assumption its in the Sport fishing rules 2009/2010 pamphlet edition..

Are you referring to this article on pg 30? Because this is in reference to waters that DON'T allow bait - "where use of bait is prohibited". it is really referring to catch and release for non-bait anglers. We all understand the WDFW regs can be confusing, but trust us (or call them) the 5 fish rule applies to bait anglers. I'm going to leave this report up because the comments are helpful to educate anglers that this IS illegal activity. Not trying to gang up on you alphafish, but you are wrong and if caught you will get ticketed. As Aaron mentioned, we will not post any further reports that mention illegal fishing tactics from you.

These are the only rules that pertain to catching trout, on a lake, with bait, unless stated otherwise under the specific lake entry in the Special Rules area. I'm not trying to be a thorn in your side, I'm not calling you out on this because I have nothing better to do, and it's not the goal of this site to jump on anyone breaking the rules. However, you are breaking them above and beyond what would be called an accident, and *seem* to have little regard for actually learning what they are. Read the rules for your style of fishing on page 31, acknowledge that you were in fact mistaken about them, and go fishing! Nuff said.

I will no longer fish with bait and if I do fish with bait all fish will be kept.. I apologize for breaking the rules and thank Aaron and Mike for being on their game and correcting me on this as, Im not trying to break the rules I assure you for that.. Also like I said before all fish but one was hooked in the lip and were released alive and well...I shall do some additional reading of the regs so there will be no more future problems...Thank you

I brought this up at work with a room full of fishermen and we were all surprised. We all fish for trout, but usually not with bait and would have done this wrong ourselves. I read that pamphlet 8 or more times a year, and every time I go to a new body of water...but there is still things to learn from it. It is confusing, but I know that many of the trout I have caught on worms and powerbait were in a bad way after swallowing the hook (which most seemed to do) including many on lake margaret when I was younger....
