Fished Black lake for Largemouth/Smallmouth bass on Sat. May 9th. We wanted to go to Silver Lake in Cowlitz county but the lake was having a tournament so we opted for less busy waters...... should have fought the crowds at Silver lake.... fishing stunk at Black lake. Did however catch 2 smallmouth bass one on a balck blue flake spider grub in about 18 inches of water in the NW portion of the lake, and a nice one (2.5lbs/15.5 inches) on a chartruse purple back jerk bait in about 2.5ft of water in the eastern shore just south of the trailor park on that good point with the docks everyone knows about. Thought I would see more bedding bass on this lake the water temps ranged from 55 to 57.8, to cold for largemouth yet but just right for small mouth. Some "hot shot" told us that the bass have been on beds for a month...... REALLY!? since April 9th........? water temps back then were 47 to 51 degrees at best, even to cold for the smallmouth spawn..... but thats what listining to dock talk gets you........ anyone who has spent as much time fishing tournaments up and down the west coast as I have knows to put this gossip out of your mind. Looks like you can pretty much write off black lake from you "bassin destination" list. It is lost to to kayakers, water skiiers, and jet crazies, not really managed for fishing as far as I can tell, trout, Bass, or otherwise........ Silver Lake here I come.
