Got a late start and hit the lake around 11:00am and headed North from the Newport Launch. Stopped and trolled from Groat Point to the bridge and then along the Northside of 520 until 2:30 with nothing to show for my troubles. I was marking plenty of fish between 10' and 20' but nothing was hitting in that zone. Ran down to Luther Burbank to give the dog a potty break and picked up a few perch off the docks in 12' of water. I decided to give my Pink Salmon rig (pink glow mini hoochie behind a small flasher) a shot and put it down 45' trolling from the docks to the North end of the Island. Didn't even have a chance to sit down after putting the rod in the holder and fish-on! Released a 4+ pound chinook and put the rig down again. 15 minutes later one more take down and this one just ran and ran until I thought I lost it. I quickly reeled in my line and found my gear attached to the fish almost next to the boat which immediately turned into another run. Well I got the fish to the boat and it was another chinook well over 22" and at least a couple of pounds heavier than my previous fish. Released the fish and called it a day. I'm going to re-petition the WDFW to open this lake to fin clipped chinook, I can't fathom why they are protecting them. The water temps varied between 58 and 62 degrees and was quite stained South of Groat Point. A special shout out the the nice boat captain who felt he needed to get a better look at me playing my fish and buzzed me in his 35' boat at maximun wake speed. If I see you again I'll be sure to share some of my rocks with you.
