I had a meeting/presentation in Davenport this morning and decided to fish at Horseshoe for the first time.
After taking a wrong turn (had my iPhone upside down!!!) I finally found the lake at about 10:30am. I had to change into appropriate fishing toggs and didn't actually get on the water until about 11:15 or so.

The lake is very shallow for the most part with only one "hole" that goes about 40' if my finder can be trusted. The water temp was 68° at the surface and 62° at 20'.

There was evidence of an earlier mayfly hatch so I began with a hare's ear under an indicator near the edges of the "hole". I caught 3 12" or so Rainbows in the next hour. A local stopped and asked how I was doing and after a short conversation he told me to use a olive bugger deep and fish if vertical and that there are some hold overs that stay deep. I moved out into the center and did as he said. After about 5 casts with no luck I got a nice 18" Rainbow that followed my bugger almost into my lap! He didn't take the fly until it was about 3' below me. Over the next 2 hours I caught 3 more nice ones and 2 recent planters.

A small squall came in about 2:30 and ran me off the lake.

A fun time and I will probably return to see if there are any 3 or 4 year holdovers!

Tight Lines!
