Thought I would head out to one of my favorite fly fishing spots to see if the cooler weather brought out the fish yet. Got there at about 3pm and fished for about 5 hours without hooking up with any fish. Had a few bumps in that time, but nothing that stuck. Trolled carey specials, prince nymphs, olive wooley buggers, etc. on an intermediate line. At about 8pm all the fish in the world started rising, as there was a hatch on. I hooked up two right away, up top on a floating line pulling a prince nymph. The fish were each about 16", lots of fight in them. Tried a few other flies to see if I could match the caddis hatch that was on, but then the bats came out so thick that they started to freak me out. They kept swooping in within a few feet of me. I took a cast and accidently hooked one of them and so my fishing was over. Headed for shore, dragging the bat, and by the time I reached the launch the thing was drowned, so I could safely remove it without fear of getting bit. Next time the bats are out I think I will just let my line out, trolling style, instead of trying to cast. Ugh, I hate bats!
