Went to tapps for the first time of the year, This is the fisrt year that i have really targeted smallies, so i have been reading everything i can find. On a topo map i found a big hump and headed straight to it. The wind was blowin so hard the whole time it was hard to stay in position. My brother was draggin a small grub and got a 16 inch smallie, his biggest so far. He caught a couple more, but they were dinks. I didn't catch any. We were fishing 14 to 20 ft of water. We tried all the usual smallie stuff. I didn't notice any algea bloom that some guys were talkin about. Water was 61.

After we left tapps, we went to a little lake down the street to see how it was.
We put the boat in and drove around fan casting and sight fishin, after about an hour of no fish we left. The lake is gin clear and full of milfoil, but there is no fish. We only saw three pickerel (I think) and one small blue gill.

Last week we went to another pond in Auburn and did ok my brother out fished me though, his biggest was about 18 inch lmb. Usually we can catch big bluegill and crappie, but not that time.

We went to a pond right across the street from tapps Last week also, but we got there when it was getting dark so only fished for about 45 min. We caught about 17 lmb or so but they were all dinks (8 to 12 in.) We are gonna go back when we have more time to try and find the big boys. Good luck to every one!

Two questions for you...
1) What little lake downthe street are you talking about?
2) The Pond across the street from Tapps, is that North of the lake across from some mobile homes with only shore access a few steps off of the main road?

Ya, I think that is the pond i was at. I think that trailer park is Bowman. That is the one that is dead. The other one is just before you drive onto Inlet Island on the right. There is bluegill in there also. It has fallen trees and millfoil allover. I fished Hidden lake over on the other side of the lake to. That was about 5 years ago. I got about a 4.5lb lmb out of that one I think that is on lake tapps hwy. It is private though. I posted pics of a smallie and a lmb but they didn't post.

I've fished Tapps a couple of times this year and have done well on the smallies, I haven't been there for about a month though. Typically I look for the gravelly/rocky points, especially the main lake points. I throw smaller crankbaits and curly tails and make sure I am making bottom contact. I don't know why, but for me they seem to prefer the smaller crankbaits. And I always use scented curly tails or use Smelly Jelly. Every fish I have gotten is typically in 10-20 feet of water, even early in the morning they were that deep. Keep trying, Tapps has plenty of smallies.
