Let me start this report by getting some facts out, so people don't just flock to American Lake thinking it's easy pickings. I've fished this lake many times and gone home skunked. Usually this occurs when someone is running around on a powerboat making all kinds of noise (which is any time the weather is nice). Now I'm not talking about fishing for kokanee at 50-90 ft deep, I'm talking about the big trout that feed in the south end of the lake. They don't bite if they hear noise. I only see them caught by fly fisherman, or really quiet trolling like I do from my kayak. The guys trolling with electric or gas motors will catch some, but they are generally smaller.
So, yesterday while trolling flashers and a vibrax blue fox #3 in blue/silver, I hooked and landed a 24 inch 5 pound rainbow. The fish was in 10-15 feet of water. Everyone else I saw out yesterday either got skunked or had really small trout - but they were also using noisy engines to troll or being rowdy and drinking beer while anchored up. Don't get me wrong, I love to goof off and drink a beer or some rum just as much as the next guy, but you just can't catch quality fish here if you're noisy.
