Ice fishing is finished in the Coeur d’Alene area. There is, however, some good fishing to be had for shore and boat fishermen. Shore fishermen have started throwing out dead smelt and herring under a float on Lake Coeur d’Alene and have had some good hook ups with over-sized pike. Hayden Lake has also been producing a few pike, but the average catch is much smaller this year in comparison to the last few. On the chain lakes, some fishermen have been slow twitching Husky Jerks and having moderate success. Chinook on Lake Coeur d’Alene are starting to feed more aggressively. Rainbow trout still abound in Fernan Lake and my wife and I have been having some wonderful success while trolling The IDFG will also start their 2010 stocking programs very soon on Fernan .

Bassmaster22,
You will want to hold out until about April 1st on Hayden Lake if you want to show up and have an excellent chance at landing a pike! The most consistent late winter fisheries are going to be the chain lakes and the far southern end of Lake Coeur d'Alene. You also want to consider what caliber of pike you are looking to catch. If you are looking for trophy pike and a chance at a possible state record, you will want to focus all of your efforts on Lake Coeur d'Alene! Wherever you end up...Have a few Husky Jerks, some fresh Smelt and Herring and a few spoons.
If you are looking for a nice day of pike fishing while having the opportunity to land a few other fish species, focus on the far east and far west ends of Fernan. There is an outstanding natural fishery on Fernan, and the stocking efforts accentuate the productiveness of the fishery. If you fish all day, there is the opportunity to catch 5 or 6 different species in a single day! Begin the day fishing the slough on the east end of the lake with grubs and minnows. Troll during the middle of the day with small rapalas and spinners. Finish the day on the south east or north west end of the lake drifting night crawlers or indigineous minnows.
