Well it is good to be able to report some positives in regards to the cutthroat fishery in this lake. The surface temps remain between 47 and 49 degrees but the lake is beginning to show signs of activity. Launching at Newport, the water visibility was about a foot at best. Coal creek had been running high and muddy for the last week and really put some color in the lake. I was sure May creek had done the same so I headed to the opposite side of Mercer Island to find some clear water. I found smolt activity just outside of Andrew's Bay and shortly thereafter hooked and landed a 19" cutt 25' down on the rigger. I worked the area hard for another 2 hours with no luck, I can't imagine that there was only one fish in the area. The water was very clear here, I could see the bright yellow tip of my release clip at over 20' down. I suspect the jet skiers that showed up disrupted the fish a bit. Headed up to the North side of I-90 to see if I could pick up another fish before calling it a day. It took a little while but eventually I picked up a 14" fish that I'd classify as a hybrid. It hit at 30' down on the rigger and took the same lure as the other fish, a silver flatfish covered with a UV clearcoat. By that time the wind started to pick up coming out of the West, so I headed back to the launch and called it a day.
