Went to the north end of Lake Lenore with low expectations. This lahontan cutthroat trout fishery has not been doing so well the last couple of years. A call to a local fly shop owner confirmed that it had been a slow spring for most. When I arrived at the normally crowded north end of the lake and found two skunked anglers leaving, I figured I was just in for a couple hours of watching ducks on the lake.

However, with the lake all to myself I got lucky. I was tossing a perch colored Krokodile spoon with a single barbless hook. In two hours I hooked seven nice trout, catching (and releasing) four of them. The smallest fish was around 2 pounds, the largest was over five. All were in rosy red spawning colors.

Variable winds, partly cloudy and apx 50 degrees out. Didn't have a thermometer to measure water temp. The water clarity was pretty good and I did not see as many cutthroat cruising the shoreline as usual. Floating weeds, as always, were a minor nuisance to deal with. Be sure to check the regulations before fishing this lake since special rules are in effect.

The fishing may not be great for everybody at Lake Lenore this year, but if you get lucky like I did, you just might have a great day on the water!

Lenore is done for, over cooked you might say. Poaching and over fishing during the catch and keep portion of the season, has nearly wiped out the fishery over the last few years. I was there and saw it as it happened. Every afternoon the same four to five vehicle would show up with one adult and three to four kids. They piled into their boats and off they went to harvest every fish they could get. I knew then and there it was the beginning of the end. The good times on Lenore are a thing of the past I'm afraid.
