Finally got out on the Lake ... Soccer and Baseball with the boys is really cutting into my Fishing!! Beautiful day yesterday!! Hardly any Skiers yet :-) :-) Water temp on the suface is up to 52 degrees ..

Beautiful day, water like glass, and hit I-90 with an ancient 3" Abalone Spoon that is probably 50 years olde ... My favorite! Fished on top at 10-15' deep and pretty quick, as I saw bait rolling early in the AM as the sun came up. Got two nice 20"+ Downstream Cutts right away. As the sun came up I switched to Plug Cut Herring, and worked a bit deeper and slower, and we picked up 3 more by about 11:00am.

I still was not seeing quite as much bait as usual. Tho .. the fish were barfing up Stickle Backs on the way up to the boat. ( Or are they called Thread Fin??)

As I type this at 4:30 am Sunday, I'm heading out again. Mother's Day present to me, from her to me ... She let me go fishing 2 days in a row!!

PS... I accidently hit one of the cables from the bridge. They had been working on the bridge lately I noticed ... I think they replaced cables? ANYWAY, when I pulled up my downrigger ball, it was just covered with HEAVY DUTY, white grease!! And I mean a whole bunch!! I guess they lube those cables for rust protection?? What a mess.

How fast were you going? Seems like I see most people going slow (1mph)
For similar time constraints you mention, I'd like to get some exercise while fishing and start using some paddle power. If I drop much below 3 to 4mph though its probably not worth it. Thanks for the advice

Sounds like a great day! Which side of the bridge were you on?

For 2" Spoons .. Canadian Wonders etc ..or my Old Abalone I run 2.5-3.0 mph max. ... I get good erratic action, instead of at the higher speeds, where it is a constant spinning action with no flutter. If you watch closely at the slower speeds it will rotate, and then flutter, rotate some more ... then flutter, which I prefer.

Also for a plug cut Herring it doesn't take much more then 1.5 - 2.0 mph ... You could easily mooch it from a row boat. Tiny Herring and 1oz maybe more, and a person can cover the whole water column, and also troll with it. Sometimes a down rigger is not the best way to go.

When I first started on the Lake 20+ years ago, I had a little Aluminum boat with a 5hp motor. I used the motor to get where I was going, and when I fished, I rowed. Depending on the lure you get a much better erratic motion. Back then (and still now) I often use a Wedding ring type lure with worms, and do just fine. My Original "Olde Skool" Pacific Mariner "Salmon Moocher" had Oar Locks for just that purpose.

I fish both sides .... They say to fish the Windward side, yet if you watch closely on a windy day, the Leeward side has 'Boiling" water due to the currents from the Windward side which draw bait.

Ps... I did get out on Sunday .. Fished 520 for a change, and we got a few. It was so calm in the AM, debris was everywhere, and it was tough till the wind came up a bit. It's amazing how dirty that lake can be. Picked up about 10 tennis balls for my Black Lab!!

Many Thanks. I'll give it a whirl. Sounds like I'll be at the top end of the speed, but 'I'm goin for a workout' is much better received these days than 'goin fishin'
