Finished up some yard work about 11:00, and Cindy asked if I was up to a trip out to Roses. Of course that's all it took to get me in the mood, and the boat was behind the rig before the drinks were packed. Got to Roses Lake, and it was smooth as glass. Several boats on the water, but plenty of room to fish. There seemd to be an alge bloom going on as the water clarity was quite a bit less than last week, and the surface temp was 60-61* today. Started at boat launch and headed down the westerly shoreline. Picked up a few "small" bluegill, and a couple of keeper crappie. As we neared the south end of the lake we noticed a nice Lund with a couple of guys fishing along the shoreline. As we were working our way in their dirrection, they boated several "Nice" crappie, and some hard fighting bluegill. Turns out it was sumsteel and his dad. As we were having a hard time getting hits at this time, I aske what the secret weapon of the day was? They shared what they were using (thanks caine), and since we didn't have the exact color combo, we tried different colors to get as close as we could to what was working for them. We finally got the combo down, and started getting some hits. Later in the afternoon the bite picked up and we kept a nice mess, and C&Red several smaller ones. Cindy caught one nice yellow perch and we picked up several nice crappie and bluegill. We ended up with five trout caught incidently while jigging for the bluegill. All the larger fish were caught in 10-12 feet of water, fishing really slow. Just above the weeds and moss. Cindy caught some on a jig under the bobber, and I jigged without bobber.
We ended up pinching a small portion off a greenish plastic nymph (used as the head), and then adding a pearl/grey micro nymph from berkley. to this we added one crappie nibble nugget in white. A lot of work to get em to bite, but ya gotta do what it takes. /16 oz jigheads were the choice of the day. The size of the fish in the pic doesn't do them justice, because of the angle from which I took the pic. Air temp in the upper 70s with an occassional light breeze. what a great day on the water.
