On Sunday afternoon and as the result of a last minute thought we decided to fish Lake Shannon for a few hours. So boat in tow we headed up to the lake. There were 11 rigs in the parking area when we arrived and 3 boats were just returning to the launch area. The usual “Hey, how was fishing” conversations were not promising, something about sunburns and no fish. Anyway, we launched the boat and head for the dam end of the lake (the end with the dam) and over the side goes our usual kokanee gear. Shortly there after a gust of wind blows the boat around and I wrap one of the lines up in the trolling motor. ½ hour later, a few comments about the end of the lake we were at and a quick disassemble/reassemble of the motor we were fishing again. It was sort of funny, the only other time I wrapped a line up in the motor was also at Lake Shannon. After things got back to normal we had slow but consistent action on a mixed bag of different sized kokanee. In the end we kept 2 kokanee, 11” and 12”, and released or lost a bunch more.

I think that for our next trip to Shannon I will bring the ultra light trout gear, my kokanee chum and a jar of eggs. There were a couple boats anchored and fishing feed eggs that were absolutely slaughtering the kokanee. The fish seemed to be smaller but it looked like they were having a blast.

I took the wife there in april of 03. We camped at baker tryed fishing there in the early am with no luck. I had heard Shannon was good so we packed up and headed there. I didnt have any eggs of maggots so we heading back to town and back again. We parked near the dam end and began to fish. We werent catching anything but people all around us were. I asked a group near us what they were useing. Red eggs and maggots. Thats what I bought and was using. They were chumming and were nice to let us fish with them so we could catch some fish too. We got a cooler full of fish and headed home. They grouped we fished with said chumming was the way to go. At that time I didnt know what a kokanee was but I was told they were good to eat and they were. I was told they were silver trout from the other group and how many we could have. It was alot of fun.

Some realy nice picture's included with your report. Is the color screen on your fish finder showing the "thermocline" ? Not familiar what that looks like on the screen. Also, is the upper most number on the fishfinder screen the depth, second the surface temp and the bottom number trolling speed? What is the tall structure a picture of? I was wondering if the egg's and chumming method of fishing was alive or dead. Is that method used much on Lake Steven's for those kokanee?

Thank you for you mention of the pictures. I am not sure what the structure is, but it is very unique. I would love to explore it but the access road is posted no trespassing. I am sure that the structure has something to do with the mining history in the area. In the other picture the thermocline is deceptive. In the picture I have the FF set with a lower range of 50’. The water is around 200 feet deep but my screen is only showing the top 50’ of water. In this case the thermocline is approximately a 20’ band of water between 12’ and 35’. Although we did catch some fish on the surface, the larger fish were holding at about 30’ in the lower portion of the thermocline (In the picture there are three fish holding at 30') . In my experience both Baker and Lake Shannon are anchor and chum lakes. On Sunday a couple of the boat guys were fishing feed eggs and were on fire. Not sure about the Stevens thing but I am sure it would work…although the trollers may not be happy with you.
