The dogs & I sarted at Shiner, but it was very slow, and Hampton was no better, so we packed up (I did most of the work for some reason) and went to Potholes City... err lake. The crowd wasn't too bad, but the fish were still getting pounded. I decided to target the big catfish that sometimes inhabit Lind Coulee, after catching a few smallmouth and a couple of small largemouth (Crawfish Jigs with traliers).

No bites on heavy line/weight, so I went to 4lb test and finess nightcrawler (split shot only). It really paid off. Total catch for the day: 2 Largemouth (small), 11 smallmouth (up to 3 lbs), 1 walleye (very small), several panfish, and 7 catfish (biggest 2 were 21 and 11 lbs each). The real fun part (other than watching the dogs go ape over the big ones)? I forgot my net at home. LONG battles. In fact one guy on shore yelled (goodnaturedly) "So land the thing already!"

All in all from a slow start, it turned into a great day for fishing, and catching. Pix weren't the best, but I was alone. They were taken quite a ways from their origins before photographing.

Good luck!

I wonder how big a catfish you could catch if you through a hook into one of those fuzzy white things and tossed him over the side for a while. OK, I'm just kidding. I like dogs to. Nice fishes. Happy Fishing

Looks like those cats could eat the dogs. Nice report.

Actually, it turns out the dogs got to eat a bit of the cats (Yes, the fish, not a feline!). To AJ's dad: I saw one in South America that could have. Chicken works better though, according to the locals. Those were actually the second nice string this year. Are there more than ever in Potholes and the seeps?

What kind of Catfish are those? I have caught a fair number of bullheads there but never any cats! I can't say for sure but looks to me from the photos like they have a rounded tail??? All catfish have a forked tail and bullheads a rounded tail...

Blues are a bit less rounded on the tail, but you can't see the tails on these from those photos. Channels are the brown ones with even pointier tails than the others. The tails on these are pointed, though. The bass next to the big one is the only tail visible, other than one dog's. If you want sheer numbers of catfish, and fair sized ones, any of the lower Snake river areas, or where it joins the Columbia, are excellent. Now through the 4th of July have been my best times. Night fishing is very good there, but you can catch plenty in the daytime. Basically drift around with bait (worms, shrimp, anything meaty), on or near the bottom.
