What began as a beautiful day on Rock lake ended in agony. We drove from Spokane, leaving at about 4:30am, and got to Rock lake
just before dawn. We could not have had asked for better conditions. The lake was relatively clear as was the sky for the better part of the early morning. We began fishing from the shoreline at the south end of the lake. I started with nightcrawlers dressed with a marshmallow....nothing. Then I switched to salmon eggs......zero. Next I tried some spinners and spoons......zilch.
However I wasn't the only one having trouble. I saw people trolling, pitching, jigging, fly fishing, all with no success. However I do have some good advice for shore walkers like myself. First of all avoid the area near the fence line to the right of the boat launch. Some locals put some bed springs down for crappie several years ago which creates snag city. The best place to fish from the shore, according to past history, is twenty feet to the left of that fence line. Cast about thirty feet out and slowly retrieve your bait. I recommend a night crawler tipped with corn, marshmallow, or eggs. Be sure to use a slip sinker to avoid the snags. Lastly unless you're boat fishing don't cast expensive lures. This lake is very greedy and is full of snags. Good luck, as this lake will be hopping as it gets warmer.
