Left the house at 0630 and picked up "Datsun"- Michael on a beautiful sunny day to go up to see Lake Shannon in Skagit. Found the lake easily. Launch is huge and in great shape. 8 other rigs parked at the launch.
Water was like glass, although a weird greenish color. From generous tips given by rseas, we motored up the lake to the bottleneck. Here we started trolling behind various flashers... various colored wedding rings, Promise Keeprs, Krocodile, etc. It was such a bummer that my f.f. has died this week. We could not know bottom while underway. The lake is a MINEFIELD of stumps and what seems to sometime be 25' trees that are "Topped" but only the upper 2' are sticking out of the water,, and that can be in relatively deep water. Floating wood everywhere also.

Did not have a single hit or anything until about 80% up the lake while passing a very small floating dock, I had just pulled my line from the clip and was reeling in when I got a good hit. Had the fish on for a short bit, he came out of the water I think twice. Appeared to be a nice fish 16-20" and prob. a couple pounds. Nice white fat belly is what I remember in the air. Self released and said good-bye.
One other boat had a 15-16" cutt. other boat I talked to got skunked.
Crawfish pot had 1 large 6" craw. (which now resides in my sons aquarium with the Lake Cavanagh craws)
I like the lake even though the fishing was slow. I think there are some lunkers in here, just shy.
Not a single house on the lake or any development.

My guess is shannon will probably pick up as the water up that way warms up a bit more and the trout get a little less timid.

I would like to be out on a lake not developed my self. Thats how most of them are in Idaho. Thats funny about the crawfish turning into pets. 6 inches sounds like a good sized one. Great report even though it was tough fishing.

Quad, the stumps/snags are why I suggest that folks new to the lake start out fishing the south end of the lake. It is much deeper there, especially in front of the dam, and you won't snag up your offerings or hit a stump with your outdrive. If you are very careful or have a sled, it is fun to run up to the inflow of the lake and drift fish for dollys/bull trout. Its good to hear you made it up and back without any issues and that you had nice weather, I wish you better luck on your next trip.

Thanks for the fun Quadfather, Ive got the sunburn to show for all the fun we had, haha! It was great to get out and see a non developed lake. And It was a quite beautiful area. Although the stumps and floating logs made us really pick our way through the water. In a man made lake like that why would they just leave the timber as a hazard? To keep out the water skiiers?

I may be wrong but over the last few weeks the water level in Shannon has been rising and I wonder if the unstable conditions are affecting the fishing. Years ago (I was a kid), a family friend took me up to fish the fast water below the powerhouse and we fished salmon spinners for the big dollies. As I recall the fishing was good but I don't remember the details. Maybe it is time to go exploring!

hi i put out crawdad pots where the bottlneck starts and where the big creek comes in and i didnt get anything. where did u put the pots and what bait were you using?

the water color is from Glacier melt. Greenish color I asume. Best water in the world!
