so, decided that the trout in martha lake had finally calmed down enough that i wouldnt get fed and bored up releaseing dozens of stockers as i hunt for the nice holdovers. launched at 4:30am trolled a orange spin and glow on one rod, chrome flatfish on the other, after releasing about a dozen fat 10 to 12 inchers(the usual and atleast the put up a good fight on ultralite gear) i decided to scope out some of the epic martha lake bass im so accustom to seeing.
last year i was already seeing hatchling bass in the end of may but i figured maybe the cold weather had slowed down the spawn and i might be able to spot some bedding bass for once(Ive never had sucess in the past) the sun came out and i started cruising along about 4o to 50 feet off the lillys not totally sure what to look for, but it wasnt long before i saw a big green flash way up in the lillies, i almost did a double take cause it was to perfect, seeing a bass from about 75 feet awake just sitting there. motored up close to the nest, 2 females about 5 to 6 pounds and two males from 1.5 to 2 pounds just hanging out spawning,
i fished that nest for a couple hours with only a couple takes and couldnt get em to stick so i started searching again when after about 5 minutes I came across 6 fish all 4 to 9 pounds sitting on a single nest. super subtle presentation twitched right on the nest produced 2 fish in an hour and a half, first was a male about 4 pounds and then this female that was a bit over 7, kinda a fun fight on 6 pound test even though i was mostly just fighting lillypads the whole time as the fish just get taking line and wrapping up more lillies.
All in all the fish arent agressive at all and i had to put in alot of time but i was cool to see quite a few big fish, all of them would swim up to the boat and stare at me and follow the boat shadow around.
there arent alot of bass on this lake I searched half the entire shoreline and only saw 12. I also saw a 12 to 15 pound carp.
