Happy 4th everyone! Jim(stepfather) and I decided it was time to give Dry lake a rest and try somewhere neither of us have tried, so off to Stan Coffin we went. We had heard that the spineyray were loaded in this lake with the chance at catching some largemouth.
We got there around 9:00am launched and were trying to troll with beatlespins and a jig, but the weeds were horrible so we settled on anchoring and jigging. After moving several times we finally found the fish across the lake below a rock slide. We both were using red and white crappie jigs a crank or two from the bottom. We started getting bites and soon we were catching fish but they were 90% dinks with the occasional barely keeper bluegill. All of a sudden Jim says I've got a nice fish! It started to take line and we were both hooting and hollering. After a couple of minutes, Jim being the fine fisherman he is, had the fish to the boat. It was a nice 2 1/2 - 3# Large mouth. He had done it again. Caught the big fish of the day! I'm sure proud of him beings he had an ultralight rod and reel and four# test. What a hoot!
We managed to catch one Crappie keeper and a hand full of keeper bluegill and the bass which was released(catch and release bass only on this lake). All in all not our most productive day fishing but tons of fun regardless. Not sure where we're off to next weekend but I'm sure our friendly father son competitions will make it worth every dink!
Get out there and make some good memories!
