I needed an excuse to take the new (to me) boat out that the wife got me for Christmas and went to Offut as I had read that it can be decent at times in the winter. Wasn't sure if it was worth the time, but mostly just wanted to explore and try out the boat. Fished a few days earlier when it was clear and freezing cold and blowing hard. No luck. Came back on Jan. 21 after all the flooding rains and temps in the 60's (in January)thinking this might have stirred something up. Tried trolling and still fishing at various depths, with various colors of power bait, night crawlers, and even some spinners. Pretty much covered the entire lake. No luck. Not exactly sure what trout generally do for the winter, but I'm sure they don't hybernate. Finally went in search of hot coffee at the resort. No luck. It ended up being closed but I talked to one of the ladies who runs the resort who was down at the dock raking leaves. She was very friendly and said that it's been real slow, with some action on night crawlers. She was hoping the warm up in the weather might make some improvement. All in all was great fun anyway, it's a great lake and was all to myself both days (except for the bald eagles). Don't go here unless you like quiet, peaceful, picturesque, serene, and close. Good luck
