We arrived at the lake at 2:00 pm and shot right over to Noisy Creek where we joined maybe 10 other boats. It was windy but I was thankful for it because the sun was out in full force and the wind kept us comfortable. I used a lot of sun screen which also meant I was washing my hands often to keep that scent off of my gear. My buddy Dan trolled the Noisy Creek hole all afternoon knowing that any real bite would likely come in the early evening so we just enjoyed the beautiful scenery, took lots of pictures, and waited for the bite. At 7:00 pm Dan’s rod went off and minutes later with little effort on the behalf of the 6 pound sockeye, he was in the net. I was expecting a big fight based on the reports I had read and instead, he came right to the boat and in to the net. That was it until 9:00 pm when we returned to Shannon Creek’s launch, which by the way was great. It dropped off perfectly so there were no “dry launch” issues. I hate it when the boat is above water at a shallow launch and you have to muscle it off the trailer. We fished deep, shallow, and everywhere in between and basically tried to keep our presentation wherever we were marking fish which were few. We both ran the standard O chrome dodgers and double red hooks. The one fish we harvested took the hooks when they were tipped with shrimp. The bite was a 1 or 2 but the trip itself and the scenery there was a 5.

Hi Dave,
I'm thinking of heading over there in the next couple of days. I don't have a downrigger, is one necessary?
Also, is there any motel/hotel accomodation available not too far away from the Shannon Creek boat launch?
Any info would be truly appreciated.

Hi Mike, it was a last minute trip so I just hung up the phone, loaded the boat, and headed out the door. You're right Matt, the lake itself and the beauty of the area was a 5+ for sure but the bite itself was a 1 or 2 tops. Dock, other than camping nearby I think the closest lodging would be in Sedro Woolley which is maybe 40 miles from Shannon Creek. Also, I think if you are fishing for these fish without downriggers, you will have a much more challenging time getting your presentation where the fish are. I believe these fish move deeper as the sun rises so knowing where the fish are holding by means of a good fish finder, and having downriggers to get your red hooks in their face increases your chances for success. Can you fish without downriggers? Yes, I just don't think you will have as good of luck without them. Just my opinion as well and I am no expert on sockeye fishing. You might PM Matt who I believe is very experienced with this fishery. Good luck and sorry for my delay in replying. As I write this, I have received another call from my buddy Dan and we will take another short notice trip in the morning. I will let you all know how we do.
