Stopped by the fremont canal for evening to relax and chill out. But met some middle school kids and had an interesting evening. Nice guys but they had the wrong gear, 20 lb line on light spinning reels and barely casting past 10 feet. I spent a fair amount of time helping them tie hooks and attach sinkers almost as fast as they got snagged up! But they started to get the hang of it and caught handful of rockbass and smallies on the nightcrawlers. I had good results on a jighead and grub with constant bites from smallies. We all got really excited for whatever we caught though. Just to be fishing and catching is fun. I think about 16 fish caught and 6 kept as the boys wanted to fry em.
A police officer stopped by to see what we were doing and thought the canal was off limits to fishing. But he didn't have a copy of the regs so he left eventually. I've read the rules for the ship canal and i'm pretty certain we were ok. Still, a guy with a gun always makes me nervous.
Anyway, I was having fun showing them how to fish a little better, and then one said he liked fishing cause it got him out of the house were he'd get yelled at or beat up and that his older brothers were involved in gangs, my heart broke. Those of us with a happy home, we are so blessed.
