First time on Lake Washington and Lake Union in my portabote. Launched at the UW waterfront activity center. It was a little rainy at first, but the sun did make it out finally. Caught several small bass, one squaw fish, and almost boated a trout at the end. The final stretch of the adventure was back east through the Montlake cut, which was a challenge. Fighting current, wind, and wakes from bigger boats, all while hoping my battery would not die. It was a crawl, and got a bit swamped from a wake, but made it back. Was suprised during that crawl in the canal when I hooked a trout, I think, on a little chartruese roostertail I was draggin along. Got him to the boat, and lost him, but saw the telltale black and silver markings. Was a good first time on the big water.

Oh man! Urban,,, the Montlake Cut in the Portaboat...That place can be dicey in any boat considering the narrowness of the cut, and then when you put a lot of boats in there it gets really hairy.

yeah, the wave action was rugged, got tossed around pretty good in the plastic boat :) And when the water came in over the transom, I got a little more nervous.

The Cut is fun! I've taken my raft through there once. I don't think I'll do it again soon. It was less about the wakes and waves, more about the folks heckling and throwing beer bottles at me that makes it so.

yikes! Was it people on the shore, or on boats chuking the bottles at you? That's messed up.

There is a little boyscout hand carry launch on the north end of Lake Union just west of the Salmon house (and east of Gassworks). You can see it from the road, and park on the other side of the street in there. If you want to hit Lake Union without dealing with the cut, you might try there...

Great tip, thanks, Gringo!
