I drove out to LBP to lay into some bass around 8am. I caught a decent 2 pounder out there a few weeks ago and I was itching to see if there were any bigger ones. When I showed up, the water was crystal clear in comparrison to my last visit which was 20 MPH gusts, weeds everywhere and dark stained water. I was really suprised how shallow the water is. I got to really scout the dock for bigger bass and I didn't see anything over a pound anywhere.
30 minutes into fishing I was out on the last end of the dock and kept seeing the water moving like a school of bass chasing shad. I eventually watched something huge jump not too far from me. I thought it was a HUGH smallie so I freaked out as I cast in it's direction with my rapala. When I set the hook seconds later, I was thinking... how do I get the wildlife number cus this could be a record Small mouth. For about 20 seconds it was like my line was ripping away but as I got the fish in close the intense fight died very quickly to the equilivant of pulling a bunch of snagged weeds through the water only to see my first Salmon ever on the line! I was angry and really excited at the same time (I've never done any Salmon fishing). I thought it was very odd how I hooked the Salmon in the jaw just like a bass because I've heard they don't eat in freshwater. Or I got the luckiest foul hook set ever.
I believe it was a Sockeye after looking at pictures online. I also believe it was all spawned out after hearing so, so much about how well they fight. I took a few pictures with it thanks to a fellow fisherman and put her back. I also didn't know the regulations on keeping them though I have my licence. The sad thing was the fish died shortly after being put back in the water though I only had it out of the water for 45 seconds or so. I caught a few tiny bass and headed to work with a huge smile on my face.
