The day started out really slow. Then about noon, it picked up and then about 2:30, I caught the BIG one. I was using green hoochies with white corn, trolling about 1.5 mph by GPS. Caught the big one near the VA fishing dock in about 70 feet of water down about 30 feet.

OK.. I"m going out on a limb of embarrasment...but the top fish is def. a cutthroat, (the spotting) the bottom one is def. a Kokanee..
But can anyone else place those middle two with the hooknose? Looks like a Sockeye that is post spawn?? Somebody?

The bottom fish is a kokanee juvenile, the two in the middle are kokanee males pre-spawn, the top and largest fish is a kokanee female pre-spawn (I think). There are some problems with the biggest one--the stomach contents were two small rock bass and a bunch of bugs. The meat is pink and not orange like kokanee, but the pictures in the Washington fishing book look like a kokanee. The coloring and the line on the side looks like a kokanee. The inside of the mouth is white, but it has lots of teeth.

The big 1 is a cuthroat for sure and the other 3 are kokanee for sure .

Identification characteristics of a cutthroat trout :
Head blunt, jaw long - extends past eye
Small black spots on head & body extending well below lateral line, and on all fins
Red to yellow streaks on underside of jaw
Faint to no red on sides of spawning fish

Good looking cutthroat thanks for the report !

I'm going to agree with The Quadfather....First thing I said EXACTLY when I saw the pics. Middle two look like spawned Sockeyes...top one is a cutthroat, and lower one a Koke. I'll join you on that limb of embarrassment...We'll break it together!! HAHAHA But either way, nice catch!! Good job!

Tail on the "big fish" is square (trout) and not forked (salmon), so it's definitely not a kokanee. I third the cutthroat ID. Nice-looking fish though.

Lets review, kokanee are land locked sockeye, which is why they look so much alike. Kokanee spawn just like any other salmon and go through all the same color and physical changes as their saltwater going brethern. Nice cutt and how much did that big koke weigh? Nice job out there!
