HOLY MACKEREL or I should say MACKINAW. Once again I had the pleasure of being in Joe’s boat. He wanted a few fish to smoke, and I just needed to catch a fish. We arrived at his starting point on Lake Chelan, and dropped the rigged lines down. Today we started in 140 feet or so depth, and worked our way to the deeper trench on the lower lake. Joe had a new product to test, so it was going to be an adventure with a cause. Well, with the last trip still fresh in my mind I was on the edge, really paying attention to the depth finder and the rods. And I continued to be attentive. And then attentive some more. Something was wrong with this picture, and I was beginning to think the other trip was just a lucky day. About this time we were getting into the deeper water, 190 feet or so, and Joe said we should start seeing shrimp on the bottom. A short time later the shrimp started showing up, and Joe said “Get Ready for a hit. At this point I wasn’t sure whether he was meaning from a fish or if he was thinking of thumping me to change the luck. While pondering this, one of the rods went on the dip but didn’t hook up. It wasn’t long before there were dancing rods. Finally we had hit the right depth and conditions for action. Throughout the morning we had several doubles on, and a few triples, so the action was once again fast and furious. We had 15 macks in the cooler, so Joe said he would string them up for a pic then he could fillet them out. So the pic was snapped, and Joe starts in on the fish. I’d been watching Joe do his magic act of running multiple tasks so I figured no Prob, I’m up to the task. After about the second fish I was starting to get a new respect at the ability it takes to pull off the whole juggling act Joe does so well. While Joe was trying to clean the 15 fish, we hooked and boated another 13 fish making a total of 28 fish. At this point it was a little after noon, and we were at the up lake side of his fishing hole, and he said “let’s try for a couple more to round it out. So around we went, and started back down through the trench. No fish on the depth finder, no hits. Finally Joe gets one to the boat, Only one more. Shortly thereafter, I had a bite, and was able to hook up. Alright, get this one in and we’re out of here. While I was getting the fish in, Joe’s rod starts to dance. A double at the end of the day, WOW, 31 Macks, and we had been out around 5 hours. Not too Shabby. I lucked into the big fish of the day. It weighed in at 13# 8oz, and there were a total of 63# in fillets. Joe will post a report with the details later. What can I say But, WOW, Holy Mackinaw!!
