Two Firsts for me today!!
First Fish of The 2011 Fishing Season!!
First Cutthroat Trout I've ever caught!!
For me, it was a 5 star day because of the two reasons mentioned above.
I got to the lake around 4 pm.
A couple of the locals were there fishing and didn't have any luck today.
I started off messing around with some of my new bass gear.
Was testing out new baitcasters, tossing shaky head jigs and carolina rigs.
So I messed around with that for a bit and then went to rig up for trout.
When I opened up my can of worms, I was greated by the foul stench of rotten worms.
I only had them for about 2 weeks and somehow they all died and were moldy.
So, having no other alternative, I rigged up with power eggs.
I tried the lemon lime and sunrise colors with no success.
Then one of the locals offered me some worms and I accepted.
The set up I was using was a 1/4 oz bullet weight above a swivel, with about 2 1/2 feet of leader going to a small size 8 hook.
I had one of my lemon lime power eggs slid up past the the hook and slightly attached to the eye of my hook.
I then had the worm covering the length of the hook with about an inch hanging off.
Casted out a few times, waited, casted to a few different spots.
Then my pole starts to bob up and down and I'm almost in disbelief.
I was shocked, pleasantly surprised and immediately my adrenaline started going.
So I pick up my rod, reel in some slack line, and I am feeling 2 - 3 slight tugs every couple of seconds.
The whole time i'm thinking to myself, "let her eat it, do not set the hook too early and do not pull the hook out of his mouth! you can NOT lose this fish!"
So I let it play with it some more and I feel a couple tugs that were a lot stronger than the rest and I set the hook! FISH ON!!
It pulled pretty hard and took out a little bit of drag, put up a good fight.
The fight only lasted about a minute or so but I LOVED every second of it.
I got it up on the dock and asked the locals to snap a pic for me.
2 of them refused but one of them took one for me.
She measured at a hair under 13 inches and was a nice, fat, healthy fish.
Hooked her in the lower jaw, snapped a couple pics, and let her go.
Classic practice of CPR :)
So yeah, I am SUPER STOKED that I caught my first fish of the year and it was my first cutthroat ever!
