Awesome day on Rock. Windy at the outset, calm by the end, and not a cloud in the sky! We were really hoping this report would be for largemouth bass, but with the water only in the mid 40's, it just wasn't meant to be. Started out at 0900 fishing the coves on the east side of the lake. We threw plastics, jig, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and just about every other spring-time bass lures we could think to use. Did manage to get one hit around 1130 on a Texas-rigged purple plastic worm, while I did see a flash with the hit, I was unable to tell what species. By noon we were slowly trolling blue and white countdown rapalas across the lake, headed for our lunch spot. We picked up one rainbow in the middle of the lake, it was about 22" and fat. Fished nightcrawlers vertically off of a rock ledge while eating lunch. While productive in the past, no takers during lunch. Again, slow trolled back across the lake to the eastern coves with the same rigs, and got a small (15") brown. From there, we decided to bass-fish for trout which has been very successful for us in the past. We managed to pick up two more (21" rainbow and a 23" brown) on the rapalas, both came in the afternoon between 1500 and 1700. With our battery low, we headed back to the launch, trolling the whole way. Awesome day, but sure hope the water warms up soon. Lastly, we saw lots of bugs on the way in, mostly black in color.Side note: the water is super-murky right now and there is plenty of alge and, for lack of a better descriptor, goo floating in the lake. Not a big issue, but it can make trolling a bit difficult at times.
The water is pretty murky right now, but the river coming in is dropping, the lake levels are down a foot in the last two weeks, the water temperature is now in the mid 40's. Still pretty cool for bass, and the trout seem put off by something.
The lake is starting to turnover, the goo you mentioned is the bottom substrate coming up through the mixing of the surface temperature with the bottom of the lake temperature. This will usually take from 7-10 days to complete. During this time period the fish will be in a flux due to the fact they cannot find a stable temperature in the lake to stay in. Fishing will be poor due to this.
