This report covers both Saturday 4/30 and Sunday 5/1. Sixth annual trek to Wapato lake for its trout opener. It was a good year. Would have been nice to catch more fish on Sunday, but others in my boat did. Caught four in one hot streak on Saturday morning trolling a metallic blue F-4 flatfish. Three were about 13 inches, and one at maybe 15. Fought the wind a lot in my 12 foot portabote with electric motor. Tried pretty hard to get a fifth, but no joy.
On Sunday I was joined my my daughter and her bright pink pole with the LED lights on the reel that glow when she reels. Set her up with some pretty big pop gear, orange wedding ring with half a worm. Was fighting more wind, and it took a while, and the pole had a lot of bend and wiggle with the pop gear. But eventually she started getting hit, First one on, she was trying to reel, having trouble, I offered to crank it, thinking she was whimpy. But it was hard to crank with the big pop gear, and a good sized fish on, so not so whimpy. :) She got a total of three in a span of about 3 hours of fishing from maybe 7:30 to 10:30. I got nuttin.
Then she was done so I dropped her off at the shore and picked up another guy in my party. He started getting bites pretty quickly with some smaller pop gear, wedding ring, worm. But for the longest time he could not get a hook up. I was getting nothing again. The wind died to nothing, and the sun got warm. Finally in one area he got three fish in boat. I was getting pretty envious by then. Finally I pick up a fish using the pink disco light pole and big pop gear! wooo. Called it a day about 2pm.
Not that many other anglers on the lake this year. Mucho wind to fight in the morning, when it is usually mostly in the afternoon. But the fish were chunky and not really all that hard to hook up. Another good year.
