We fished from shore at lake washington. We caught lots of perch. We also caught a bunch of fish we could not identify. It had orange lips, the top of the fish was green with a white belly.Strange part was it had an orange stripe between the green top and white belly. It swallowed the hook so we took it home. Could you tell me what it is please.

is that a "white fish"?

It looks to have a pretty small mouth, but I can't see the dorsal fin to count the rays. I would say it is a peamouth, a large one at that. Peamouth have 8 rays in the dorsal, pikeminnows have 9 or 10 and their mouth extends back to the eye.

It's a whitefish, not a squawfish/pikeminnow. Specifically it's a mountain whitefish, not a lake whitefish. Great smoked, but boney for fresh eating.

Good fishing on you!!!!!

Easy way to check: Does it have an adipose fin? If so, it's a whitefish (kin to the salmon, believe it or not). If not, then it's likely a peamouth or chiselmouth or some other member of the minnow family. Sorry, can't really tell from the pictures and I'm not personally familiar enough with either to just wage a guess. (Adipose is a small, fleshy, fin located on the dorsal side between the dorsal fin and the caudal fin (tail).

Doesn't look like a whitefish to me, but again pix can deceive. Peamouth seems about right. If you want to be sure Google "fisheries biologist" and send the pic. WA state has a few.

I must add my opinion....is a Peamouth, Mylocheilus caurinus, the dorsal fin will always have 8 rays, and the red lower lips and red stripes well developed. Males have a green back, females a brown back. So says "Freshwater Fishes of Canada."
Nice photo.....I'll bet its bony.

it's a lake chub / peamouth chub. chub and northern pikeminnow look very similar. the pikeminnow have a different shaped jaw with a much bigger mouth.

Chub, I don't think I'd eat to many of those thou, but I'm sure you can catch enough for a nice fish fry. The carpenters?

Fishnfool, we were fishing at Genesee Park Boat launch. We were fishing for Catfish, HAHA!
Basser90, Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.... unless I'm fishing!
Thanks for the input, starting to believe it really is a peamouth chub. The orange lips/stripe along with other features confirm it. They put up quite a fight though!

Pea minnow is correct! They are running up the creeks to spawn right now.

Pike minnow, do not eat them due to contamination problems in the lake...

Cant see the mouth but if it looks funny like a algae eater in an aquarium then it is a whitefish

beatles carpenter > i looked it up in "freshwater fish of washington " although a few others look the same as a whitefish ... the whitefish IS a member of the salmon family and it WILL have an adipose fin while lookalikes do not ... looks like "Ghoti" was right
