OK, so I got my first summer hike in to Wallace lake, which was nice enough and my body survived (but required Ibuprofen back at the truck!). The fishing, however, was cut short after a dozen casts as my rod repair job suffered a major failure and the rod (half of it anyway) went flying into the lake.

I can tell you that I saw some dimpling and also smolt fish in the shallows so this lake does have fish. The problem with Wallace lake is the shore access is VERY limit. There are just a few locations to fish and some of them require balancing acts on not very stable logs. I'll pass, getting too old for such foolishness. If a person were to hike in a tube or raft I bet they could do quite well as I doubt this lake gets much if any pressure to speak of. Wild fish await the few up to the challenge! Actually - you COULD take a dirt bike and ride to the lake and have the raft packed on the bike, that would be a fun workout and the ride down would be sweet. :-)

(there is an alternate route on logging roads, about 6.5 miles.) Today's hike for me was 9.3 miles round trip, approx 1,400 ft elevation gain. Sunny and a perfect day to be in the woods.

Aw man, that sucks, sorry for your misfortune. Still sounds like a nice trip though, beautiful scenery!

always appreciate those alpine lake reports, thanks! Sorry about the rod. Sounds like there is a story though behind a flying half rod missile. Save it for the picnic.

Hahaha! Awesome! Sorry about the rod though. I have hiked a raft up there, and we caught quite a few fish. I can attest to the size and health of the fish up there, they are feisty and quite numerous. It's a shame that you didn't get a chance to see one. A raft is a definite must, especially with the high water this time of year, all the shore logs would be pretty murky.
