Hit the water around 730am. Dropshotted sniper snubs and panic minnows and threw tubes around docks for most of the day. Picked up 5 smallies myself on the d-shot, 2 for my buddy on tubes. Found them in 7-15 ft, water temp 70ish. Also boated 30+ rockbass, a handful of perch, and one 15 inch trout. Tried throwing a crankbait some but the dropshot was most productive. One smallie spit up a small fish when i caught it, heard about but never seen that before! Ran into a couple PIG largemouth late in the afternoon but couldn't get them to bite a thing. Those two will haunt me until my next American visit! All smallies were under 2lbs, btw. Tight lines all!

Looks like fun, good fishing. Give the pigs a little more time this spawn is dragging. Fish were bedding today on a pond.

Wow, you saw largemouth in American? I've heard of only one caught there, and one seen. And they were both reports from a close fishing buddy. When they poisoned American back in the 80's, Evergreen Bass Club did a "boat-in" protesting it. They said they personally saw a couple dozen 8 to 10 lb largemouth floating after in was done, and countless others. No smallmouth in the lake at that time that they knew of.

I caught a largemouth there last summer on a buzzbait. Thats a painful tale about the poisoning. Pretty sure I'd vomit if I witnessed that... vomit and weep.

Obviously it didn't put a dent in the rock bass and perch population. The game department rotinos (probably spelled that wrong) the lake in the 80's killing off a great largemouth population, then plants it with smallmouth in the 90's. Go figure. Oh well, I ain't complaining. American is my favorite smallmouth lake this side of the mountain. Riffe would rank right up there if it weren't for a $40 gas bill getting there only to usually be blown off the lake by 11:00. By the way, the two largemouth caught and seen by my friend were on the small lake to the left of the public ramp.

I heard the smallmouth were planted around 2000. I work at the Boathouse and have never seen a largemouth come out of the lake ever. Seen many smallies over 4lbs though.

Thanks for the imfo on the planting year. I was taking a ballpark guess. I commend the game department for planting American with smallies. The plants and their spawns are obviously flourishing.
